If you’ve been following me for a while you know that my life has been a little crazy lately. Between trying to be a rock star at my new job and building our first home, blogging has been placed a bit on the back burner. BUT, as of last week we FINALLY moved into our new home and are hopefully staying put for a while. With all that being said, between packing, moving, unpacking, organizing, cleaning, and all the other wonderful responsibilities of home ownership, I’ve been stressed, exhausted, and a bit overwhelmed. But in spite the chaos, my skin has managed to remain clear. If this chaos happened a few months ago, the stress of it all would have most certainly led to breakouts. So what did I do differently that led to a total skin transformation? Today on Sweet and Saving I’m sharing my new skin care routine and why I decided to invest in my skin health.
Besides the typical breakout during that special time of the month (girls you know what I mean), I have clear and healthy skin. I used cheap drug store cleansers because I didn’t see the need to use anything else. BUT…there was one thing about my skin that constantly drove me CRAZY! No matter what cheap drug store cleanser I used, my skin ALWAYS felt tight and itchy after washing my face. The feeling was so bad that I had to immediately use moisturizer to take the itch away. If I forgot to pack my moisturizer, full on panic set in and I would be forced to use a heavily scented, oily hotel cream on my face (yuck!). But I never thought anything of it. I just assumed that this is what clean skin felt like. It wasn’t until I started to notice some sun damage on my forehead and nose that I realized I needed to take better care of my skin. After all, your skin is just a large organ that absorbs everything…so why not treat it with the care that it deserves. That’s when I came across Drunk Elephant.
Why Drunk Elephant
Drunk Elephant is all about giving your skin a clean break. Our skin is often left vulnerable due to harsh exfoliates, chemical peels, expensive laser treatments, botox, layered foundations and powders, and irritating beauty products. Drunk Elephant formulations are balanced and optimized to work with the physiological process of the skin to make these beauty indulgences less necessary and less often. Drunk Elephant is committed to using only ingredients that either directly benefit the skin’s health or support the integrity and effectiveness of their formulations. They never take into account an ingredient’s synthetic or natural status, but instead choose based on biocompatibility. You won’t find the “Suspicious 6” ingredients in any of the Drunk Elephant products, which are at the root of almost every skin issue. So what are these Suspicious 6 ingredients? Not surprisingly they are Essential Oils, Drying Alcohols, Silicones, Chemical Screens, Fragrance/Dyes and SLS. Avoiding these chemicals makes Drunk Elephant’s products appropriate for ALL skin.
After doing my research and reading MANY reviews, I decided to take the plunge. As someone with “normal” skin I decided to sample a basic cleansing bar. After 1 use I noticed an immediate difference. My skin didn’t feel dry, itchy, or tight. In fact, it felt moisturized, soft, smooth, and most importantly CLEAN! After a week of using Drunk Elephant, my skin was actually glowing. What shocked me the most was how Drunk Elephant reduced the appearance of the acne scars on my chin that I’ve always been self conscious of. For the first time, I felt comfortable leaving the house with no foundation. I. Was. Hooked. Never, has a skin care product lived up to it’s name like Drunk Elephant. That’s when I decided to go all in.
Every morning I wash my face using the Pekee Bar. The Pekee Bar is a gentle, multi-tasking bar that cleanses, tones, and moisturizes leaving my complexion clean, clear, and soft. It effectively removes makeup and other impurities. Three times a week I exfoliate with the Juju Bar, which is probably my most favorite product of the line. It’s a mild 3-in-1 bar that deeply cleans, subtly exfoliates, and detoxifies for a soft and smooth complexion. What I love about these two products is the pH. Time to get geeky. Typical soaps and cleaners have a pH of 9 which strip the skin of it’s protective barrier (why my skin always felt tight and itchy). Healthy skin has a pH of 5.65. When skin becomes to alkaline due to the products we use, it becomes dry, sensitive, and prone to sun damage. When skin becomes to acidic it leads to breakouts, redness, and inflammation. The Pekee Bar and Juju Bar have a pH of 6.34 which does not dry or strip the skin and keeps the protective barrier intact.
Next, to prevent any further sun damage, I use Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense SPF 30. It’s a mineral based non-greasy sunscreen that doesn’t leave your skin looking ghost white. The light texture melts right into your skin. I switched out my daily moisturizer for this sunscreen which is so much better for my skin. But as much as I love to protect my skin, I can’t help but envy girls with that natural glow. Due to my skin tone, I’ve avoided self tanners as they always leave my skin looking orange and streaky. When Drunk Elephant released D-Bronzi, I was hesitant, but quickly became hooked! D-Bronzi is made of vitamins, antioxidants, platinum peptides and barrier-supportive fatty acids that defend skin from environmental free radicals. It’s a gorgeous sheer bronzer that is easily mixed with your favorite moisturizer, sunscreen, serum, face oil, or primer. The great think about D-Bronzi is that you can easily play with the color giving you a subtle glow, or something more dramatic…it’s totally up to you! This magic product doesn’t turn your hands or face orange and easily rubs into your skin giving you a streak free finish. I often use it to replace foundation on the weekends (I try to give myself 1 makeup free day a week).
Before I wrap up here, I also want to emphasize four habits that most definitely help keep my skin clear. First, I try to be very conscious of not touching my face. Our hands are riddled with germs and bacteria that clog pores and cause breakouts. Second, I make sure I am well hydrated throughout the day to flush out the toxins that can impact the clarity of my skin. Third, I make sure I eat a well balanced diet that includes reduced sugar intake. Sugary and fatty foods have a huge impact on skin health, so I try daily to fill my diet with fruits, veggies, and leafy greens. Lastly, stress has an enormous impact on skin. I frequently practice self care whether it’s working out or taking a relaxing bath so I can unwind and de-stress.
